Eddie Morfin's piece for the Alumni Artist-In-Residence Show at Marwen includes a wall for visitors to copy a quote from Mahatma Gandhi in their own handwriting.

"We have to make truth and nonviolence not a matter of individual practice, but for practice by groups and communities and nations. That at any rate is my dream. I shall live and die in trying to realize it"

I noticed the note pictured above amongst the text the other day.

In the studios Summer 2007
YouTube Theater with Marwen teaching artist Steve Ciampaglia

Steve based his course "YouTube Theater"on the lonelygirl15 saga, where film student/actress Jessica Rose created a serial videoblog highlighting fictional accounts of "Bree."

lonelygirl15 first portrayed herself to be a real 16-year-old who had to deal with typical teenage angst but quickly morphed into a bizarre narrative that portrayed her dealings with secret occult practices within her family and included the mysterious disappearance of her parents after she refused to attend a "secret" ceremony prescribed by the leaders of the family's cult. The series was an immediate hit and quickly became the most subscribed channel on YouTube. Due to her popularity, fans became suspicious of whether she was really genuine and an investigation was initiated by the NY Times which eventually outted Jessica Rose.

Marwen's homepage needed a little update in order to keep things fresh. While searching our archive, we came across this excellent self portrait created by alumna Alexsandra Gamboa. It defiantly captures the look many students get in their eye while thinking creatively about their future.

This was spotted amongst the signatures within Jordan Seaberry's piece Cultivating Marwen: 20 Years of Growth. Jordan's mixed media piece celebrates Marwen's 20th anniversary and invites the public to sign a tree rendered on the gallery wall. Steven Berkowitz founded Marwen in 1987.

Day in the Life of an Animator
April 28, 2007
Teaching Artist: Joe Merideth

Nine students had the fantastic opportunity recently to visit Joe Merideth’s personal studio, ChewBone Animation. Joe went through all the aspects of being a professional artist—how a freelancer works, what types of clients he works with, and the many phases of animation. He talked about going from the big client who commissions a project, to the advertising agency’s role, to the team of animators who actually put it all together. The students were given the “job” as animators of a Trix commercial—each student created original characters and used those characters in creating story boards for the 30-second spot. Students listened to the actual voiceover that was used in the commercial to inspire and guide them through their initial animation ideas. The story boards were combined and matched with the voiceover to create a final project that very closely resembled the initial stages of an animation project in the professional world!

Marwen teaching artist Joe Merideth mentioned BJ Crawford's animation "A Time for All Seasonings" to me today. BJ taught a couple of character animation courses at Marwen and works with Joe at ChewBone Animation. BJ has a great blog that documents the project. http://www.allseasonings.blogspot.com/

"I am a first time filmmaker. A Time For All Seasonings has been a two year project in partnership with ChewBone Animation. Seasonings is a 6 minute "silent film" about a dancing salt and pepper duo. The idea grew from a love I have with the look and feel of old silent films. The film has another month of production and it should be finished by mid-April."

Things have been buzzing here at Marwen. I can't believe that Winter Term 2007 went by with little to no blogging! We have been working on a number of objectives that you will see come to light here on the TechStudio Blog... I must admit, though, I do have a bit of Blogging Guilt...
